Facebook’s first full scale aircraft, Aquila : Connecting Remote Areas using laser technology

Facebook’s first full scale aircraft, Aquila : Connecting Remote Areas using laser technology

Light is playing an important role in this universe, without light there is no life. People were using Light for the communication from centuries ago. Why can’t we use the same technology now to connect remote places? Facebook’s ambitious project to provide internet connectivity to the remote places on earth using laser technology and a wonderful aircraft which beam downs internet connectivity from the sky. Aquila aircraft, is a part of facebook’s Internet.org effort.

Facebook’s Drones for internet connectivity

Aquila is a solar powered unmanned plane. It has the wingspan of a Boeing 737, but weighs less than a car and can stay in the air for months at a time.

A breakthrough in laser communications technology, made this possible. Facebook successfully tested a new laser that can transmit data at 10 gigabits per second. That’s ten times faster than any previous system, and it can accurately connect with a point the size of a dime from more than 10 miles away.

This effort is important because 10% of the world’s population lives in areas without existing internet infrastructure. To affordably connect everyone, we need to build completely new technologies.

How Facebook’s Aquila Aircraft establish Connection ?

Establishing connectivity using aircraft is a totally different idea, looks like practically impossible, proving theoretically might be easier but the real world scenario might be more challenging. using lasers might seem like science fiction. But science fiction is often just science before its time. It will be tested in the real world and continue refining.

Facebook’s Aquila Project Team.

Facebook has a solid team, enough money but more importantly they are utilising it very well. To survive in market one should always think about the competitors and never give any chance to any one to come and stand with you.
